What We Do at Great Mission International (GMI)

At Great Mission International, our mission is driven by a commitment to Charity, Education, and Health, providing essential services and creating a nurturing environment for neglected, abused, abandoned, and trafficked children throughout Africa. Here's an overview of our comprehensive initiatives:

1. Holistic Childcare: GMI has established homes throughout Ghana, including in the capital city of Accra where we currently care for over forty-three children aged 0-10 and thirty-two youth aged 11-20. Many of these children come from backgrounds of severe neglect or abandonment, often due to parental mental illness, poverty, or other distressing circumstances. These children, referred to us by the Department of Social Welfare, the police, courts, and other agencies, require care and protection due to various circumstances. We approach childcare not merely as a facility but as a family. Our homes are staffed with dedicated house parents, aunties, uncles, and older siblings who provide love and familial support, ensuring that each child is treated as a valued member of the GMI family.

2. Healing and Love: It is profoundly rewarding to see a child who has suffered abuse start to experience and accept genuine, unconditional love. Our dedicated staff works tirelessly to help each child understand life from a new, hopeful perspective. Through consistent and compassionate support, we witness remarkable transformations as children begin to regain their lost psychological and emotional strength.

3. Education for Empowerment and Social Integration: Recognizing the transformative power of education, GMI ensures that all children receive the highest quality of schooling available. Children are enrolled in school or participate in pre-school activities thereby receiving the education they deserve to build a brighter future. Beyond academics, we also emphasize social integration. Regular visits to other places and interactions with different communities help our children make friends and learn to trust and engage positively with the wider world.

4. Education: Our children attend both public and Montessori schools and benefit from additional tutoring and educational support provided by our dedicated staff. We have also established two schools in low-income rural areas of Ghana, offering free education and contributing to community development.

5. Health Initiatives: Our health-related efforts are broad and impactful. We decrease the incidence of malaria through the distribution of mosquito bed nets in surrounding villages. GMI also conducts regular medical outreaches to support the health needs of children, youth, and families in the community, tackling various health issues directly.

6. Water Accessibility: We are committed to improving living conditions by increasing the availability of clean water in communities that lack access to potable water. This initiative not only enhances daily living but also helps prevent waterborne diseases, significantly improving community health.

7. Mental Health and Peace Advocacy: Through our peace and mental health conferences, GMI collaborates with other organizations to address global issues and share cutting-edge information. These conferences foster dialogue and solutions that promote health and healing across Ghana.

8. Community Enrichment: The revitalization of our children’s petting zoo is one of our projects aimed at providing therapeutic and recreational opportunities for the children we care for, enhancing their emotional and social development.

Our motto, "Until there are no orphans", reflects our enduring commitment to these goals, as we continue to extend our reach and deepen our impact with the support of our partners and donors. At GMI, every action is a step towards creating a healthier, more secure future for the children and communities we serve.

Our Approach to Care: Our primary goal is to heal the children from the traumas they have endured. This healing process is holistic—addressing psychological, physical, and spiritual needs. We understand that recovery from trauma is not a straightforward journey, but we are committed to making it a transformative experience for every child in our care.
